An innovative research space simulating a real home which is monitored by advanced robotic equipment was launched in October 2016 at partner NCSR "Demokritos" premises in the context of the RADIO project.

The research space, which was recently completed with the help of companies IKEA Greece and KOTSOVOLOS, is situated at the Library of partner NCSR "Demokritos".

In the designated space, namely Roboskel Lab, researchers from the Institute of Informatics & Telecommunications of NCSR "Demokritos", which coordinates the RADIO project, aim to develop a software system using sensing equipment within a smart home to act as a robotic medical monitoring system to cater for the needs of the elderly. The system offers them the autonomy to remain in their home should they wish to do so whilst medically monitoring them on a daily basis.

At a first stage, Roboskel Lab will be used as a pilot, whilst research results will then be applied in clinics and nursing homes in selected European countries partnering the project.

European Commission Officer, responsible for the RADIO project, Mrs. Monika Lanzenberger welcomed the collaboration by means of video conference from Brussels, Belgium and spoke warmly about the future of such innovative projects.

The opening of the lab was conducted by the President of NCSR "Demokritos", Dr. Nikolaos Kanellopoulos along with Research Director and Head of SKEL Lab Dr. Vangelis Karkaletsis.
Guests of the evening included the aforementioned sponsors as well as Dr Suzanna Kolyva, Greek representative for H2020 Health, demographic change and wellbeing,and other representatives from Research Institutes and Universities from across the country.
